{"id":2422,"date":"2017-12-06T09:02:10","date_gmt":"2017-12-06T14:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/blog\/?p=2422"},"modified":"2020-05-18T15:25:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-18T19:25:14","slug":"choosing-appropriate-plc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/blog\/choosing-appropriate-plc\/","title":{"rendered":"Choosing the most appropriate PLC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As many machine automation professionals know, deciding on which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/blog\/category\/plc-application\/\">PLC<\/a> to work with can be one of the most difficult decisions you have to make when organizing your control system. \u00a0There is no one size fits all equation, so are here are some guidelines I use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brand<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 \u00a0Many of the major players such as have small, medium, and large-scale PLCs. \u00a0Always consider when brands the end user already is using. \u00a0Things will always go smoother if the maintenance personnel is already accustomed to the brand of PLC you choose. \u00a0Also, try to pick a brand that will have stellar local support for the end user if you are not in the area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sizing<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Sizing a PLC is imperative to the success of your project.\u00a0 If you go too small,\u00a0 you may max out your I\/O <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/schneider-electric\/modicon-quantum\/1\">(such as this Modicon Quantum I\/O)<\/a>on changes and additions.\u00a0 On the other hand, if you go too large,\u00a0 you may blow go over your budget. Leaving room for expansion is ideal, but, in the long run, going over your budget is not practical.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Count up your:\n<ul>\n<li>Discrete input points<\/li>\n<li>Discrete output points<\/li>\n<li>Analog input points<\/li>\n<li>Analog output points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Communications.\u00a0 \u00a0regularly have a port available on the PLC to communicate with it from your laptop without disconnecting other devices. \u00a0With modern PLCs with several communications methods, there is no reason for this to happen.\n<ul>\n<li>Will you need remote I\/O? \u00a0This can reduce installation time and troubleshooting in the long term.<\/li>\n<li>Will your system utilize an HMI? \u00a0How will you communicate with it?<\/li>\n<li>Having a way to remotely monitor your PLC is becoming standard practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/\">MRO Electric and Supply<\/a>\u00a0has new and refurbished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/yaskawa\/1\">Omron<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/siemens\/1\">Siemens<\/a> products available.
