Control Techniques UNI1403 Overview

The Control Techniques UNI 1403 is a variable speed AC drive for induction and servo motors. The UNI 1401 is a size one model with a nominal rating of 1.5 kW at 380 V and 2 hp at 460 V. The output current for the UNI 1403 is 3.8 A with a typical input current of 5.8 A. These products are manufactured in United Kingdom and are designed for Metal production, paper processing, and material conveying usage. They come with a 2-year warranty from MRO Electric.  The Control Techniques UNI 1403 comes with 5-mode operation capabilities available. What are the operating modes for the UNI 1403 variable speed drive?

  • Open-loop mode – This mode is used for use with standard AC induction motors. In this mode, the drive administers power to the motor. The frequencies vary per user input. The motor speed is derived from the output frequency of the drive and slip that occurs because of the mechanical load. The function of the drive is to improve the performance of the motor through slip compensation. For low speed, performance depends on which mode is selected; either V/f mode or open-loop vector.
  • Open-loop V/f mode- The motor voltage is in direct proportion to the frequency except at low speeds. At low speeds, there is a voltage boost in V/f mode that is set by the user. This mode is used for multi-motor applications.
  • Open-loop vector mode- The motor voltage is in direct proportion to the frequency except at low speeds. To keep the flux constant during variable load conditions, the drive uses the motor parameters to administer the correct voltage necessary.
  • Closed-loop vector mode – Closed loop mode is used with induction motors that have a speed feedback device fitted. Using the fitted speed feedback device which makes sure the rotor speed is correct, the drive directly controls the speed of the motor. To keep the torque on full to zero speed, this mode control motor flux and keeps it accurately controlled.
  • Servo – Servo mode is used with permanent magnet brushless motors. These motors have speed and position feedback devices fitted. Motor speed is controlled by the drive using the feedback device to make sure the rotor speed matches the demand.
  • Regeneration – The regen mode is used as a regenerative operation for front-end four-quadrant operation.

The UNI 1403 variable speed drive by Control Techniques is dual rated for both heavy and normal duty as it applies to continuous current rating and short-term overload limits. It satisfies Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC, the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 89/336/EEC, and the CE Marking directive 93/68/EEC.
