The Modicon AS P890 300 is an I/O remote, I/O processor module that is manufactured by Schneider Electric for use on the Modicon Quantum Platform. The AS P890 300 I/O module with power is responsible for providing an interface between the PLC and 800 series I/O modules. The Modicon AS P890 300 includes two half-duplex ASCII ports.
The Modicon I/O remote, I/O processor module AS P890 300 is a self-powered unit drawing its power from either a 115/230VAC or a 24VDC source. A front panel ON / OFF switch is located on the front panel that can independently switch the power sources on and off. The power connector inputs are jumper-selectable for the 115V/230VAC inputs. The main backplane can handle up to 7 A of combined +5.0VDC and +4.3VDC load current supplied by the processor to I/O.
The Schneider Electric AS P890 300 has two basic modes of operation. The first operational mode is replication. The second operation mode for the AS P890 300 is emulation.
To accomplish remote I/O communication with the Modicon AS P890 300, you will use either a single or a dual coaxial cable network. Several numbers and drops can be communicating through the AS P890 300. The number will vary depending on your system PLC.
How are the operating modes selected? The AS P890 300 I/O processor has rotary switch selection. This incorporates either a single or a dual RI/O cable. Why are the operating modes selected in this manner? In this way, improper Comm Error LED indications are done away with when operating a single cable connecting the drop.
If replacing a P89X processor, the AS P890 300 is compatible with power and the backplane. If replacing a J890 or J892 processor with the AS P890 300 a backplane replacement is required. You may also need to replace some wiring and power supply depending on the number of I/O modules being used on the drop.
The AS P890 300 was manufactured by Schneider Electric to perform with complete compatibility with all of the Schneider Electric controllers that support the S908/CRP-type Remote I/O networks and all 800 Series I/O modules.
Several LED indicators are located on the Modicon AS P890 300 for ease of recognition. PWR OK will indicate green when power voltages are appropriate and within specifications. READY will indicate green when internal diagnostics are complete and successful, and the module is prepared to operate. COMM ACTIVE indicates green when the unit is engaged in communication on the remote I/O network. When the COMM ERROR A indicator is red, it could be indicating several things wrong with cable A. It could be a broken or missing cable, poor or loose coaxial connection, intermittent noise, or a mode selector switch that is not in the correct position. The COMM ERROR B indicator is red when cable B is experiencing problems. Cable B could be indicating the same problems as cable A. ASCII ACTIVE is green when that port is active, ASCII ERROR is red to indicate a problem with the communication port. The final LED is OURBUS ERROR, and it indicated red for errors with local I/O or another module issue.
